Sports Offered

 

Sports Offered – Saint Gregory’s offers a wide variety of sports, including:

Fall Sports – During the Fall sports season, Saint Gregory’s offers Modified Soccer, Intramural Soccer, Learn-to-Play Soccer, Golf and Cross Country Running.

Modified Soccer: Modified Soccer at Saint Gregory’s is a team oriented, after school activity for 7th & 8th grade boys. Students work on soccer skills, building camaraderie, and developing a strong sense of sportsmanship. Every member of the team participates and plays in the games. The Modified Soccer team practices several days after school and participates in games and contests with other local schools including Doane Stuart, Loudonville Christian Academy, Holy Spirit, The Albany Academies, LaSalle, CBA, and Brown School. This is a wonderful opportunity for novice and advanced soccer players to come together to represent their school.

Intramural Soccer: Intramural Soccer at Saint Gregory’s is a team oriented, after school activity for 4th – 6th grade boys. Students in this program develop soccer skills, learn the rules of the game, and develop an understanding of sportsmanship and fair play. Students practice several days after school and compete against each other in intramural games.

Learn-to-Play Soccer: Learn-to-Play Soccer at Saint Gregory’s is available to students in grades 1st – 3rd. In this program, boys learn the fundamentals of the game, practice basic soccer skills, and begin to play scrimmages with each other  Fair play, sportsmanship, and fun are emphasized in this program. Students participate in the Learn-to-Play program several days after school.

Cross Country:  Cross Country running at Saint Gregory’s is offered to all boys in 5th – 8th.  The Cross Country team participates in the Friendship League and competes against other private and public schools in the Capital District. Individual effort and performance is celebrated in conjunction with team accomplishments.  Boys are encouraged to achieve their personal best. Good sportsmanship is emphasized at practice and in the meets.  Cross Country runners practice 2 or 3 times per week.

Boys who are participating in the Soccer program are also permitted to run on the Cross Country Team.  Practices are scheduled on alternate dates from Soccer practice.

Winter Sports – During the Winter sports season, Saint Gregory’s offers Basketball, Intramural Basketball, Learn- to-Play Basketball, and Ski Club.

Basketball: Modified Basketball at Saint Gregory’s is a team oriented, after school activity for 4th – 8th grade boys. Students work on basketball skills, building camaraderie, and developing a strong sense of sportsmanship.    Every member of the team participates and plays in the games. The Modified Basketball teams practice several days after school and participate in games and contests with other local schools in their league including St. Pius, Troy CYO, Holy Spirit, Catholic Central, Averill Park, Watervliet, etc. This is a wonderful opportunity for basketball players of all levels to come together to represent their school.

Intramural Basketball
Intramural Basketball at Saint Gregory’s is a team oriented, after school activity for third grade boys.  Students in this program develop basketball skills, learn the rules of the game, and develop an understanding of sportsmanship and fair play. Students practice several days after school and compete against each other in intramural games.

Learn-to-Play Basketball
Learn-to-Play Basketball at Saint Gregory’s is available to students in first and second grades.  In this program, boys learn the fundamentals of the game, practice basic basketball skills, and begin to play scrimmages with each other. Fair play, sportsmanship, and fun are emphasized in this program. Students participate in the Learn-to-Play program several days after school.

Ski and Snowboarding Club
Saint Gregory’s offers ski and snowboarding programs during the winter months. Students in 5th – 8th can sign up to attend Friday twilight skiing at Jiminy Peak. A charter bus transports students from Saint Gregory’s to the ski area, leaving at 2:30 p.m. and returning at 8:30 p.m. Lessons may be included in the ski/snowboarding package. Parents are encouraged to attend and to help with chaperoning.

Boys who are participating in the Basketball program are also permitted to participate in the Ski and Snowboarding program.

Spring Sports – During the Spring sports season, Saint Gregory’s offers Track and Field competition. Lacrosse is offered depending on the interest of the students.

Track and Field: Track and Field at Saint Gregory’s is a team oriented, after school activity for 5th – 8th grade boys. Students work on individual skills in running, sprinting, hurdles, long jump and triple jump, shot put and discus throwing, and relays.  Students also build camaraderie and develop strong sense of sportsmanship. Every member of the team participates in the meets. The Track and Field team practices several days after school and participates in meets against local schools in the Friendship League. Meets take place at local high school tracks including Shaker, South Colonie, and Bethlehem. Individual efforts and team results are recognized and celebrated. This is a wonderful opportunity for students of all abilities to come together to represent their school and improve their personal fitness.

Lacrosse:

The Saint Gregory’s Lacrosse team participates in 7th and 8th grade division of the local rec league. It is a team based sport with an emphasis on developing both individual skill as well as basic offensive and defensive team concepts. The team practices 3 days a week after school and plays round robin games on the weekend. Every member of the team plays in games. During the winter we run a skills development session one day a week after school and it is open to all upper school students.
