Egg Car Races in First Grade !
February 14, 2010

Mrs. Dollard’s First Grade class recently studied machines and their contributions to society. The first grade class learned the different types of simple machines including: the pulley, the screw, the inclined plane, the lever, the fulcrum, and the wedge. They built models of these simple machines out of lego and kinex. They also learned about potential and kinetic energy. To put together, in practical terms, all of the lessons learned, the boys were asked to build a model car that could hold and protect an egg on its journey down an inclined plane. Model cars were made of all sorts of material ranging from a popcorn container stuffed with cotton to a wooden block lined with sponges. Wheels made of bottle tops and safety belts made of rubber bands also made their appearance. On Friday, February 12, parents, friends, faculty, and staff gathered in the class room for the big race. At the end of 3 rounds, only 5 eggs succumbed to the forces of gravity. Great fun was had by all in this hands-on lesson. Well done first grade!
