Saint Gregory's Shoots Hoops for Haiti February 5, 2010
In an effort to help raise funds for victims of the January earthquake in Haiti, fifth grader Leland Ben rallied his friends and basketball teammates to raise money for the Capuchin Friars’ mission in Haiti.
On Thursday, January 28, 2010, Saint Gregory’s fifth grade basketball team challenged the school’s fourth grade basketball team to a game that drew a large crowd. In addition to an admissions charge, snacks and drinks were sold before and after the game to help with the fund raising effort. The entire Saint Gregory’s community came together to cheer for both teams. Despite a valiant effort, the fifth grade fell to the fourth grade 19-17. The school band played, the stands were full and the concession booth was very busy and profitable. By the nights end, $1,156 was raised with three separate parents pledging to match what the event earned- “so far we are at $4,300 and still counting” stated Leland.
All proceeds from the event will be sent to the Capuchin Friars mission in Haiti. Leland was made aware of the mission’s needs through his church’s retired associate pastor, Father Lloyd Reberyo.
